Judith Tartaglia is an experienced litigator, coverage attorney, manager, and consultant with special expertise in the medico-legal aspects of closed-head injuries. Her career spans speech pathology, rehabilitation, communication, and law.

Ms. Tartaglia brings the synergy of art and science to conflict resolution and to the courtoom. Prepared by successful careers in law and speech pathology -- and drawing on her strong interpersonal skills and warm, engaging personality -- she applies the art of persuasion to the resolution of a dispute or the settlement or trial of complex litigation.


 

Private Practice of Law
1999-Present

 

Ms. Tartaglia's law practice encompasses plaintiffs’ and defense litigation, consulting, and mediation, with an emphasis on catastrophic injuries. She has an outstanding background in insurance coverage and has been retained as an expert witness on coverage issues.

She has defended or brought lawsuits on behalf of, among others, children and adults with closed-head injuries, spinal cord injuries, people with severe burns, and people involved in coverage disputes with their insurance carriers. She has also defended wrongful death lawsuits and serves as local counsel for a national firm involved in high-profile food-borne illness cases.
In an Of Counsel role for the firm of Montgomery, Kolodny, Amatuzio & Dusbabek, she consults on and co-defends many of the firm's catastrophic injury cases.

Her medical background, coupled with her expertise and credibility in insurance coverage issues, uniquely benefits both plaintiff and defendant. In addition, her outstanding leadership, analytical, strategic, negotiation, and communication skills enable her to get to the heart of any issue and help the parties reach agreement or settlement.

In her role as trial lawyer, Ms. Tartaglia litigated and tried many cases to successful conclusion. As Assistant General Counsel, Ms. Tartaglia and her staff delivered approximately 800 coverage opinions in an 11-state region. As a trial lawyer and national consultant, she evaluated and defended closed-head and other catastrophic injury claims and prevailed in nationally publicized sexual harassment, and product liability suits, including a widely publicized food-borne illness case.

   
The Children's Hospital
1969-1984
 

As Assistant Director of Audiology & Speech Pathology, Ms. Tartaglia supervised ten speech-language pathologists and three learning disabilities specialists. She evaluated speech-language pathologies in children with multiple congenital handicaps and closed-head injuries and treated speech-language pathologies. She also co-directed a multidisciplinary cleft-palate team.

   
Education and Training  

Ms. Tartaglia holds a Certificate of Completion from the Harvard Law School Program of Instruction for Lawyers Mediation Workshop, October 2004. This intensive, week-long program of instruction emphasizes the theoretical bases of mediation and includes practical simulations. The course is taught by pre-eminent authors and researchers in the field of mediation, including Frank Sanders, Linda Singer, and Michael Lewis.

She also earned a Certificate of Completion from CDR in Boulder, Colorado. She serves on the Colorado Bar Association's ADR Committee, participates in the Court Annexed Mediation Program (CAMP) for the Denver County Court, and is a member of the Colorado Council of Mediators and Mediation Organizations.

Ms. Tartaglia earned her JD from the University of Denver College of Law. Before embarking on her law career, she was a PhD candidate in Speech Communication at the University of Denver.

She also holds a MA in Speech Pathology from Temple University and a BA in History from Douglass College (Rutgers University). She maintains her certification in speech pathology and keeps current on the related medical literature.
